Student Handbook

Introduction

Welcome to High Aspirations School. Parents and students are asked to read the following pages closely to become familiar with the school expectations and policies.

Statement of Expectations

Zoom Etiquette
  • We expect students to make every effort to ensure an enriching educational experience for everyone.

  • We expect both teachers and students to be fully committed to the learning process and in an appropriate environment. No one should be taking a class on public transportation, at a park, in a cafe, etc.

  • We recommend using a blank background or at least one that is not distracting to others in the class.

  • Students' cameras must always be on, their faces must be fully visible, and they should not be engaged in any other activity while class is being conducted. Specifically, all phones must be off.

  • We presume most teachers and students will participate in class at home and understand that there may be unexpected disturbances (from a child, sibling, pet, etc.), but every effort must be made to keep distractions at a minimum.

  • No class may be recorded without the specific written permission of High Aspirations School.

  • Students are allowed to dress informally, but we expect everyone to look appropriate for an academic environment and to present themselves accordingly.

  • We expect all students to treat their fellow classmates and teachers with respect and sensitivity.

Acadmic Integrity
  • Academic integrity is the cornerstone of any school or academic community. Cheating, plagiarizing, or receiving unacknowledged assistance are not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

  • At High Aspirations School, cheating is particularly antithetical to the mission of the school: to challenge elite students to achieve their full potential. Students must recognize that cheating will only prevent them from mastering the course material, slow their academic growth, and undermine their future.

  • If students are found to have cheated, they should expect dismissal to be a possible outcome once the administration has assessed the level and details of the incident.

Course Expectations and Policies

Syllabi
  • 48 hours before the start of a course, students will receive an email from their teacher providing access to the course page.

  • If a course requires any hard copy texts or materials, the teacher will notify their students at least one week before the course begins. Please note that we try to keep any hard copy materials to a minimum.

Class Apointment and Attendance
  • Students are expected to attend every class and should communicate any absences to their teacher prior to the class.

  • Students are expected to come to class on time and fully prepared.

  • Missing classes may result in students not receiving any credit at the end of the course.

  • Special circumstances for missed classes will be handled on an individual basis.

Homework
  • Students should expect a minimum of one hour of homework a night per class (for an elite, motivated student).

  • More work may well be required, however, to prepare for exams or to write essays.

Extra Help/Tutors
  • Extra help may be arranged at a free time that works for both the teacher and student, but students are also encouraged to work with one of the tutors offered through the school.

  • Students will be charged a modest fee for extra help. The price will depend on whether it is with the teacher or a student tutor.

Grading
  • Each class is graded pass/fail as we want to emphasize the mastery of the course material more than the grade. The passing grade will be 90 in order to ensure that students have attained the expected level of mastery.

  • Students will receive an individual class report at the completion of the course that includes in-depth feedback on areas of success and areas for improvement.

  • Each student will also receive a certificate upon successful completion of a course.

Teacher Evaluations
  • At the end of every course, we will give students an opportunity to evaluate their teachers and the course in general.

  • We will share this feedback with the teachers so that they can improve their teaching and their courses as needed.
