Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely predicted to be one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st century. Driving much of the recent progress is the field of machine learning, which consists of the set of methods and algorithms to train AI systems. Whereas traditional software engineering relies on humans to codify logic into computer programs to accomplish specific tasks, machine learning systems infer the logic on their own, simply by ingesting large amounts of labeled and unlabeled data. This framework is very powerful and enables machine learning models to achieve high performance on applications such as Computer Vision (image classification, object detection, image generation, video generation) and Natural Language Processing (speech recognition, text summarization, text generation, text translation), where it is very difficult or even impossible to solve problems using the traditional software engineering approach. We are already seeing many exciting applications across virtually every industry, including self-driving cars and drones; automated medical diagnosis; auto-generated art, writing and marketing content; faster drug discovery; greater stability in fusion reactors; artificial tutoring; and many more. This track teaches students the math, statistics, and computer science fundamentals that serve as the bedrock for all machine learning approaches. It then provides a comprehensive background on each of the core types of machine learning algorithms: unsupervised learning, supervised learning, and reinforcement learning. The track covers both classical machine learning approaches such as linear regression, logistic regression, and decision trees as well as cutting edge approaches such as bagging / boosted tree ensembles, neural networks, convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, transformers, and generative adversarial networks. We also include a series of courses focused on the ethical and philosophical questions surrounding artificial intelligence and how humanity can best navigate the immense potential both for good and for bad using this technology. Upon completing the track, students will be fully prepared to thrive as machine learning engineers at top companies in the field including FAANG, top machine learning research companies such as DeepMind and OpenAI, and any of the many startups doing exciting work with machine learning. We believe machine learning and artificial intelligence will become an integral part of virtually every field moving forward, so we highly recommend students take this track to set themselves up for an ever changing world.
